Erst neulich las ich diesen Blogeintrag bei Sandra von Junikate Puppen zum Thema “Puppografie“. Und nicht erst dann habe ich mir überlegt, endlich mal mein Wissen in Sachen Fotografie zu vertiefen. Klar, ich habe eine gute Kamera und mach nicht erst seit gestern Fotos damit. Trotzdem ist es ein ganz anderes Unterfangen, versucht man einigermaßen professionelle Fotos z.B. für den eigenen Dawanda Shop zu schießen. Hat man genug Geduld und etwas Glück, ist schon ein gutes Bild dabei. Auf Dauer aber wollte ich gern mehr Wissen zur Fotografie sammeln und damit gezielter Einfluss auf meine Ergebnisse nehmen.

Also begann ich mit der Recherche zum Thema (Puppen- & Produkt -) Fotografie für Anfänger…:

Es gibt natürlich eine Reihe guter Bücher zu dem Thema.
Jüngst gelesen habe ich selbst z.B.
“The Busy Girl’s Guide to Digital Photography: A Really Useful Introduction to Taking Great Photos” von Lorna Yabsley
und dann noch
“Crafter’s Guide to Taking Great Photos” von Heidi Adnum:

Ersteres geht mehr auf die technischen Feinheiten und Kamerabedienung allgemein ein, es werden viele Grundbegriffe geklärt und Eigenheiten von Kameras besprochen.
Letzteres hingegen zeigt anhand ganz konkreter Beispiel (unter anderem auch im Kapitel Dolls & Toys) mit vielen Bildern und Ideen, die Möglichkeiten der kreativen Produktfotografie auf. Zudem ist ein ganzes Kapitel nur der Nachbearbeitung der geschossenen Fotos mit entsprechenden Fotoprogrammen gewidmet.

Aber wenn man nun nach der Lektüre diverser Fachliteratur doch noch tiefer in die Thematik einsteigen will und vielleicht sogar Spass an diesem neuen Nebenhobby gefunden hat, lohnt es sich allemal einen Kurs zu machen.
Noch erschwinglich und lokal ist da ein Kurs an der örtlichen Volkshochschule, falls diese gerade einen Fotografiekurs anbietet. Oftmals bieten auch kleinere Fotoläden Workshops und Kurse an.
Diese werden sich dann zwar nicht speziell auf Produktfotografie beziehen, es lohnt sich aber trotzdem zum Einstieg, vor allem um die Grundbegriffe und Funktionen der eigenen Kamera kennenzulernen und so aus dem Automatik- in den manuellen Modus zu wechseln.

Möchte man sich nun aber mehr auf die Produktfotografie spezialisieren, so gibt es vor allem online so einige Infos und Kurse dazu.
Bei Craftsy gibt es beispielsweise eine Menge (englischer) Online Classes und zwar nicht nur zum Thema Fotografie sondern auch für ambitionierte Hobby- Köche und Bäcker, genauso auch zum Thema Stricken und Nähen, uvm….
Empfehlen kann ich an dieser Stelle den Kurs von Caro Sheridan “Shoot It: Product Photography Class“, den ich selbst schon belegt habe. Daher kann ich diesen auch gerne weiterempfehlen. Auch wenn man denkt man macht doch schon ganz gute Bilder, so gibt es immer noch etwas zu verbessern und dazu zu lernen. Der Kurs ist zudem nicht zu technisch oder langatmig und damit ein guter Einstieg in die ganze Thematik.
Auch der Kurs “Product Photography at Home” von Jessica Marquez behandelt das Thema wie man Produktfotografie einfach aber effektvoll zu Hause umzusetzen kann und dürfte damit ebenso interessant sein.

Nicht vergessen sollte man, wenn man schon bei Video Kursen ist, auch mal bei You Tube nach entsprechenden Tutorials zu suchen. Diese sind zwar nicht so ausführlich wie oben genannter Online Kurs, bieten aber auch schon einen Einblick in die schier endlosen kreativen Möglichkeiten der Produktfotografie.

Auch das Equipment ist nicht ganz ohne Bedeutung. Natürlich sind die Kameras der neuesten Smartphonegeneration schon ziemlich gut und man kann vor allem mit Hilfe von Apps auch damit bereits beeindruckend gute Fotos machen.
Aber wenn man Spass an der Fotografie hat und wirklich professionelle Bilder machen möchte, so kommt man wohl nicht drum herum, sich irgendwann eine digitale Spiegelreflex Kamera zu zulegen. Ich selbst nutze schon lange meine geliebte Canon EOS 600D zum knipsen.
Aber es gibt auch von anderen Herstellern vergleichbar gute Kameras im ähnlichen Preissegment. Führend sind wohl zur Zeit aber eben Canon und Nikon. Welche der beiden Marken man bevorzugt, ist wohl eher Geschmacks- und Gewohnheitssache. Wirklich große Unterschiede gibt es zwischen vergleichbaren Modellen der Firmen wohl nicht.

Welchen Weg man auch wählt, man sollte vor allem immer Spass an dem haben was man tut.
Gerade die digitale Fotografie bedeutet zu Beginn viel Ausprobieren und Learning by Doing – immerhin kann man so viele Bilder schiessen, wie man mag und dann nicht gut gelungene Fotos jederzeit einfach wieder löschen….

Just the other day I read a blog post by Sandra of Junikate on the subject of “Puppografie“.
And started thinking, I had to finally deepen my knowledge in all aspects of photography. Sure, I have a good camera and have been am snapping photos for a while now. Nevertheless, it is an entirely different endeavor, attempting to make reasonably professional photos e.g. for my etsy shop. Sure, if one has enough patience and a little luck, a fairly good-looking picture can be taken eventually. But in the long run, I wanted to gather more knowledge about photography and thus take targeted impact on my results.

Dolls- & Product- Photography

So I started researching on the topic of dolls & product – Photography for beginners …:

Of course there are a number of good books on the subject.
Just recently for a start I have read this two:

“The Busy Girl’s Guide to Digital Photography: A Really Useful Introduction to Taking Great Photos” by Lorna Yabsley
and
“Crafter’s Guide to Taking Great Photos” by Heidi Adnum:

The first one is more focused on the technicalities and camera operation in general, it first of clarifies many basic options and then discusses peculiarities of different cameras.
The latter, however, shows mostly concrete examples (among others has a whole chapter on Dolls & Toys) with many images and ideas, thus shows the many possibilities of creative product photography. In addition, an entire chapter is devoted only to the post-processing of photos taken with corresponding photo programs.

But if you still, after reading various books about it, want to delve deeper into the subject and maybe  even begin to like this new hobby, it is always worthwhile to take a photography class.
Often very affordable and also locally based is a class at the local community college, if they happen to offer a photography class right now. Often also smaller Photography Stores offer workshops and courses. These may not specifically refer to product photography, but it is still worthwhile to get started, especially for learning the basic concepts and functions of your camera in order to finally switch from automatic to manual mode.

If you want to specialize in product photography, there are many sources of information and classes online. On Craftsy for example, there are a lot of Online Classes – not just about photography, but also for passionate amateurs cooks and bakers, as well as on knitting and sewing, and much more ….
I can recommend the class by Caro Sheridan “Shoot It: Product Photography Class“ which I myself have already taken. Even if you think you are already taking quite good pictures, there is always something to improve on and learn. The course is also not too technical or lengthy and therefore a good introduction to the whole subject.

Also the class “Product Photography at Home” by Jessica Marquez touches the issue of product photography made easy and how you can effectively implement it at home. You should also remember, while you’re already looking at video classes, to search You Tube for relevant tutorials. These may not be as detailed as the above-mentioned online classes, but do often offer a glimpse of the endless creative possibilities of product photography.

Also the equipment you use is not without significance. Of course, the cameras of the latest generation of smartphones are pretty good nowadays and you can make them work especially with the help of apps creating impressive good photos.
But if you really like photography and want to make truly professional images, at some point you will have to get a good dslr camera. I am shooting on my beloved Canon EOS 600D. But there are also other manufacturers with comparably good cameras in a similar price range. Which of the brands you do preferred is probably more a matter of taste and habit. Really big differences do not exist between comparable models.

Whichever way you choose, always remember to have fun with what you are doing. Especially digital photography means to begin by experimenting and learning by doing – at least you can shoot as many pictures as you like and then delete them at any time afterwards easily.
So get your cam and simply start shooting… now!
